The market town of Ulverston is in the scenic county of Cumbria with the sweep of Morcambe Bay to the south and nearby, the popular Lake District. Stan Laurel was born here and is honoured at the world's only Laurel and Hardy Museum, located in the town. Records of a settlement here are noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 and by 1280 the town is granted a market charter that is still utilised to this day with two weekly markets on Thursdays and Saturdays. Before it was no longer navigable, the Ulverston Canal was an important contributor to the town’s economy; it is said to be the world's shortest, widest and deepest canal.
Ulverston is pretty market town with a charm enhanced by its old buildings and cobbled streets. Visitors will find more than ample amenities, lots of independent shops and wealth of cuisines to dine on in a number of restaurants and eateries as well as plenty of pubs. To take in the beauty of this town and surrounding area, a visit to Ulverston’s Hoad Monument provides breathtaking views as far as Morecambe Bay and into the Lake District. This landmark was built in 1850, to commemorate a local resident, statesman, founder member of the Royal Geographical Society and intrepid explorer, Sir John Barrow.
