Hertford

The market town of Hertford in the county of Hertfordshire has a recorded history that dates back to Saxon times, when Theodor of Tarsus presided over the Church Synod of 673.  From a fortified burgh at the time of the Norman Invasion, Hertford has grown to become a thriving and successful town that has attracted many visitors through the years; including royalty. Hertford is thought to be the town that Jan Austin used as a model for Meryton in the novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

 

There is a popular, busy Farmers' Market in the town centre on the second Saturday of each month; bringing local produce and handicrafts as well as a vibrant array of goods to be bought. Shoppers come from far and wide to enjoy shopping in Hertford and with over 200 shops in the town centre, including a large number of independent traders and specialist shops – you can see why. Hertford is also popular for is dining, drinking, cultural and entertainment choices, attracting people from across the county.
