The charming market town of Wotton-under-Edge in the county of Gloucestershire is within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the popular walkers’ footpath, the Cotswold Way National Trail passing through here. The first recorded appearance of the town is around 940 in a Saxon Royal Charter of King Edmund of Wessex. Later, the Domesday Book of 1086 describes Wotton as part of the royal manor of Berkeley and ruled by the Lords of Berkeley. By 1243 an annual fair and weekly market were established and a weaving and cloth making industry was growing; it was very much a ‘cottage industry’ operated out of people’s homes.
