Worksop

Worksop is a large English town neighbouring Sheffield on the River Ryton in Nottinghamshire. The town is known as the "Gateway to the Dukeries", due to a large number of ducal residences in the local area. It is situated at the northern edge of the famous Sherwood Forest, of the Robin Hood legend. As such, the founding years of the town were depicted on the children's comedy series, Maid Marian and her Merry Men.

Worksop developed as a market town in the middle-ages after William de Lovetot established a castle and Augustinian priory in the town. The discovery of coal in the area as well as the construction of the Chesterfield Canal and local rail networks later led to significant growth in the town and the local area, particularly in nearby Sheffield.

Places of interest in and around the town include the Worksop Priory, Clumber Park, Mr Straw's House, The Acorn Theatre, The Worksop Regal and the Robin Hood Trail. The area is also well known for the Meadowhall indoor retail centre, which houses over 280 stores and attracts around 30 million visitors each year.
