Workington

Workington is an ancient port town on the west coast of Cumbria, in England. It enjoys alocated by the mouth of the River Derwent, near Cockermouth Maryport, at the boarder of the Lake District National Park.

The area is known to have been inhabited by humans since the last Ice Age, when seafaring settlements began to develop along the coast of the newly-formed Irish Sea. A high concentration of Roman forts, watchtowers are also believed to have been constructed along the length of the Cumbrian coastline, in conjunction with Hadrian's Wall, which stretched eastward from nearby Bowness across the width of England to the North Sea. The remnants of the fort of Burrows Walls can still be seen close to the town, along with a replica of a wooden watchtower used by the Romans. Workington and the surrounding villages of the Derwent then found themselves at a long-standing boundary between the English and the Scots until the Scottish wars of independence and even later still. It was in Workington that the 25-year-old Mary Queen of Scots landed, disguised as a common woman after her defeat at the Battle of Longside. She stayed the night at Workington Hall, where she wrote to Queen Elizabeth I shortly before her imprisonment and subsequent execution. Though in ruins, the hall is still a very impressive and popular place to visit.

Workington has excellent transport links due to its heritage in the mining and production of coal, steel and iron ore, and with such a fascinating history along with close proximity to both the Cumbrian coast and the beauty of the Lake District National Park, Workington is a very pleasant place to from which to enjoy a holiday in Cumbria.
