Wooler

The town of Wooler in Northumberland is perched high above Wooler Water in the foothills of the Cheviots, within a particularly scenic area near the border with Scotland. This region has a long history of conflict and as a result is home to castles, historic buildings and sites of interest. Wooler also lies at the edge of the Northumberland National Park that is popular with walkers and is often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Cheviots’. Close by is the Iron Age Fort at Yeavering Bell, a twin-peaked hill near the River Glen that is 361 metres above sea level. The hillfort was built as a tribal centre of the Votadini, a people whose territory was south-east Scotland and north-east England.

Wooler is an attractive stone-built market town that first hosted a market in the 12th century and continues with a weekly market to this day. The town offers ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs along with an incredible backdrop of the foothills of the Cheviots. Within the area are excellent facilities for cycling, horse riding, fishing and rock climbing as well as leisurely walks exploring the diverse wildlife, flora and fauna.
