Wiveliscombe

The town of Wiveliscombe in Somerset lies close to the border with Devon, at the foot of the Brendon Hills and is the gateway to Exmoor National Park, which includes the Brendon Hills, the East Lyn Valley and the Vale of Porlock and stretches across both counties. The National Park offers diverse landscapes enjoyed by walkers with hilly open moorland and 34 miles of coast; several areas of the moor have been declared as Sites of Special Scientific interest due to the variety of wildlife, flora and fauna. Nearby too are Clatworthy Reservoir with excellent fishing and Clatworthy Camp, an Iron Age hill fort above the reservoir. Wiveliscombe was once a market and cloth making town and has a wealth of industrial archaeology relating to early iron workings.

Wiveliscombe offers ample amenities and shops and is a thriving rural community in a picturesque setting, attracting outdoor enthusiasts and visitors with an interest in the natural and historic attractions of the area. Wiveliscombe’s Grade II listed Town Hall was built in 1840 by Richard Carver for Lord Ashburton and previously accommodated fish, butchers’ and pig markets as well as an assembly room upstairs.
