Wirral or the Wirral is a peninsula in North West England, between the River Dee, which forms the boundary with Wales, the River Mersey, and the coast. It is known as "Wirral" and "The Wirral" interchangeably.
Settlement of the Wirral is known to date from the Mesolithic period, of circa 7000 BC. A series of excavations at Greasby have produced a number of artefacts suggestive of a hunter-gatherer community, with the addition of Neolithic axes and pottery having also been found. It appears that the area was inhabited right through the Stone Age to the present.
popular attractions of the area include the Leasowe Lighthouse, and Hamilton Square at Birkenhead.
