The small village of Winkleigh in the attractive county of Devon lies between Dartmoor and Exmoor in an area of diverse and beautiful scenery. Evidence suggests the village was first settled around the Bronze Age, although there is little record of it prior to the Saxon invasion. Winkleigh was the seat of the Saxon Earls of Gloucester and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was considered a prosperous settlement with ‘a park for wild beasts’ that belonged to the King. The remains of two 12th century castles attests to the continued prosperity of the time and by the 13th century the village had a flourishing sheep and wool trade, a weekly market and three annual fairs.
The village of Winkleigh today is a pleasant and tranquil place with a small but adequate choice of amenities, shops, eateries and pubs plus proximity to more developed towns nearby. For those who come to take in the natural beauty of the area, there are trails, footpaths and town walks that offer diverse flora, fauna, wildlife, views and insight into the heritage of the village and this region.
