Windermere is famous for its outstanding Lake and beautiful setting in the popular county of Cumbria. Visitors come primarily for the delights of the lake and the attractions that feature around and on it. The many boating options offer a great choice of fun, including the Tern on Windermere passenger services that serve the length of the lake, from the Lakeside Railway Station, on the Lakeside and the Haverthwaite Heritage Steam Railway at the Southern end of the lake, up to Waterhead Bay near Ambleside in the North. There are stops along the way at Bowness and Brockhole.
The Windermere Ferry is a delight for visitors to Windermere and runs across the lake from Ferry Nab on the East of the lake to Far Sawrey on the West side. Do though keep your eyes open for the Lake Monster. Lake Windermere is said to have at least one large, unusual creature; possibly a fish or animal. The Centre for Fortean Zoology claims there have been many sightings of a giant eel-like creature in the lake since the 1950’s. The 'monster' first hit the headlines after being spotted in 2006 by a university lecturer and his wife, Steve and Eileen Burnip.
