Wigtown

Wigtown is a very small town and former royal burgh in the south west of Scotland, near Newton Stewart and Stranraer. It is located on the Machars Peninsula, which is bounded by the Solway Firth and the Irish Sea, and gives its name to the county of Wigtownshire. Wigtown is identifiable by its large, broad street, which was the focal point of the medieval town, and now carries an elegant Georgian façade, and tree-lined streets.

The town experiences a comparatively mild climate due to the Gulf Stream, which makes it ideal for gentle outdoor pursuits. The nearby River Bladnoch can be fished for Atlantic salmon, while Wigtown Bay is the largest Local Nature Reserve in Britain. The area is also known for its historical sites and for its scenic walks, which include the Martyr's Stake, which is a monument marking the location where the two Margarets were believed to have been drowned in the 17th century under religious persecution. Wigtown is also known as "Book Town" for its high proportion of book-related businesses and as home to Scotland's largest second-hand bookshop.
