The small, historic market town of Wigton, in the picturesque county of Cumbria is at the heart of the Solway Plain between fells and coast. In the town centre is the triangular market place that has stood since medieval times. The first market was held here in 1262 and where visitors today see the fascinating memorial fountain built in 1872, once stood a wooden Market Cross. Pretty Georgian buildings surround the market place, retaining the charm of bygone times and much of the town’s original medieval layout is still evident. A unique feature here is the Highmoor Bell tower that was built during the prosperous days of the Industrial revolution and completed in 1887; the bell was known as ‘Big Joe’ and played tunes three times daily.
This thriving market town still hosts regular markets and livestock auctions as it has for over 750 years. There are traditional pubs, a choice of restaurants and eateries, good amenities and shops as well as historic buildings, sites of interest and visitor attractions in Wigton and the surrounding are, that provide plenty to see, do and enjoy.
