An industrial town on the River Mersey, Widnes is within the county of Cheshire and a place where Vikings once sailed in, raided and killed the local Anglo Saxons; settling on land at the head land of the river. Until the Industrial Revolution, Widnes had only a few settlements. By 1847 though, the first chemical factory was established here and prosperity through industry came to Widnes. There was though a price to pay as the industrial landscape took over the natural scenery. The Alkali Act of 1862 imposed regulations to limit damage and now, the days of intense chemical industry are long gone in Widnes.
Visitors to Widnes today find a modern town with plenty of amenities, historic sites, restaurants, eateries, shops and pubs. There has been investment in its parks and open spaces; Victoria Park with its bandstand, model boating lake, tennis and basketball courts, bowling greens, skateboarding facility, glasshouses and butterfly house is wonderful oasis, as is Hough Green Park, Crow Wood Park and the diverse nature reserve of Pickerings Pasture, with wildflower meadows overlooking the River Mersey.
