Located in the county of Essex, the small town of Wickford serves as a commuter town for London, with excellent transport links. Like nearby Billericay, the town of Wickford was inhabited in prehistoric, Roman and Saxon times, with evidence of this found during the excavations at Beauchamps Farm. The old Roman settlement now lies buried under the houses at the bottom end of Beauchamps Drive. The town is included in the Domesday Book of 1086 and it is known that Wickford was primarily, an agricultural village. It was as World War II came to an end that the town experienced its greatest growth, with many from London choosing to move out of the city.
The Willows Shopping Centre in Wickford on High Street offers shoppers an excellent choice of outlets and eateries and the town also boasts a swimming pool, library, open-air market and a community centre. Nearby, Wick Country Park is the place to relax or enjoy outdoor activities. Covering 50 acres with trails around the site and over the brook, visitors will find delightful ponds, a vast lake stocked with bream, perch, roach, rudd and tench, old hedgerows, World War II pillboxes and plenty of flora, fauna and wildlife.
