Whithorn

Whithorn is a former royal burgh in the Southern Scotland county of Dumfries and Galloway, near Wigtown. It was the location of the first recorded Christian church in Scotland, named in Latin Candida Casa, meaning 'White House', which was built by Saint Ninian in the 4th century. The town's current name is a direct translation from the Latin to Anglo-Saxon. A monastery of Northumbria was later founded in place of the original church in the 8th century, and by the medieval era was a major pilgrimage destination. A museum is now situated in the location of the medieval ruin, under the care of Historic Scotland, and includes the country's earliest surviving Christian memorial, and (in summer only) the Whithorn crozier. The town is also the nearest settlement to Rispain Camp, where visitors can view the remains of an Iron Age fortified farmstead.
