Whitehaven is a moderately sized English port town situated on the coast of Cumbria, between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness, just outside of the famous Lake District National Park. Whitehaven is a very popular holiday destination, where travellers like to take advantage of the relaxing seaside setting but still enjoy the wonderful scenery and tranquillity of the rolling valleys of the Lake District. The town incorporates several former villages, and so retains a very village-like atmosphere, whilst benefiting from the excellent shopping and conveniences of a town.
Jonathan Swift, William Wordsworth, and Daniel Defoe all have interesting links to this famous holiday destination, which boasts one of the most extensive examples of a Georgian townscape in the county, and a grid-plan street layout that is believed to have inspired the New York City street plan. The town is best known for its rural charm and traditional way of life.
