The delightful and picturesque town of Weymouth in the county of Dorset is situated on a sheltered bay at the mouth of the River Wey and was known as ‘England's Bay of Naples’. With a rich history that dates from the 12th century, Weymouth has been involved in pivotal moments of the world, from the spread of the Black Death, the settlement of the Americas and the development of Georgian architecture, to preparations for World War II. Weymouth remains a busy port and has much to offer its many visitors. Weymouth also enjoys one of the lowest tidal ranges in the UK, allowing for safe and easy access at all states of the tide.
Weymouth is a popular tourist resort with plenty of visitor attractions but the biggest draw is the beach. The wide sandy beach is utilised for a host of beach sport events throughout the year, including beach motocross, the international handball championships, the beach volleyball classic and the fantastic international kite festival, held in May each year. The kite festival attracts a huge number of spectators to the esplanade. Weymouth is a gateway to the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and east Devon coast, important for its geology and landforms.
