Wetherby

Wetherby is a market town near Leeds, in West Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the bank of the River Wharfe and is an ancient crossing place of the river. The current Wetherby Bridge is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a very attractive feature of the already very pretty town, which is a popular destination for walkers. Wetherby boasts excellent transport links due to its heritage as a staging post between London and Edinburgh. Several of the coaching inns in the town are originals offering the same warm welcome to their visitors today.

The town is rich in interesting historical facts and features. The Knights Templar and the Knights Hospitallers held land and properties in and around Wetherby during the 12th and 13th centuries. The Knights Templar were granted the right to hold a market in Wetherby by Henry III in 1240 to be held every Thursday. Wetherby was also a rest point for the Parliamentarians during in the English Civil War in 1644.

The West Yorkshire region as a whole is a very attractive and historical landscape of rivers, moors and ancient rural villages, which is an extremely pleasant visiting place for walkers and fishing enthusiasts, as well as for that traditional English family holiday filled with fun, intrigue and adventure.
