The pretty seaside town of Westgate-on-Sea in the county of Kent is situated on the Isle of Thanet, once a separate island from mainland Kent. It was around the early 19th century when the channel in-between silted up and the island was connected to the mainland. The two sandy beaches here have attracted visitors since the 1860’s when the town experienced huge growth. Once the railways came in 1871, the town’s prosperity was assured. Westgate-on-Sea is a place that inspires, the poet Sir John Betjeman's wrote a poem about the town, Westgate-on-Sea and the artist Sir William Quiller Orchardson painted here.
Westgate-on-Sea offers visitors a truly charming seaside resort with sandy beaches at both St Mildred's Bay and West Bay, pretty beach huts, deck chairs and plenty to see, do and enjoy. Outdoor pursuits are well catered for here with jet-skiing, tennis courts, golf and lots to explore, from the rock pools to the nearby cafés, restaurants and pubs. The Heritage Centre tells the story of this unique Victorian development.
