The town of Westerham in the county of Kent has evolved from what is described as "Domesday and Pilgrims Way, to Motorway". Close to London and the M25, Westerham is a commuter town that is set amidst vast woodlands and open spaces. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book in a Norman form, Oistreham and there is evidence that the area around Westerham has been settled for thousands of years. The remains of a Roman encampment were discovered, just past the ruins of tower at the summit of Tower Woods. The tower itself dates back to the 18th century and is said to have been a folly, created for the amusement of children of the owners.
Westerham today is a busy town with lots of independent shops and an excellent choice of eateries, bars and pubs. Places of interest include the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, the statue of Sir Winston Churchill by Oscar Nemon that was donated by the people of Yugoslavia and the statue of General Wolfe who was born in Westerham in 1727 and died at the Battle of Quebec in 1759.
