West Malling

The historic English market town of West Malling in the Tonbridge and Malling district of Kent features numerous historic buildings, as well as an attractive Georgian High Street that includes an 18th century coaching inn, The Swan, which is now a public house.

The town's Saint Leonard’s Tower is a Norman keep that was built in c.1080 by Bishop Gundulf, who also built the grand castles of Rochester and Colchester, the Tower of London, and the Priory and Cathedral of Rochester. Gundulf also founded Saint Mary’s Abbey within the town for the use of the Benedictine nuns, of which significant portions of the present building still remain from the Norman period, as well as from the additions made in the medieval, Tudor and Georgian eras. Other buildings of historic interest include the 600-year-old Ford House, and the 18th century Went House.

The Beatles once owned Dounce's Manor, just outside of the town and filmed the majority of their 'Magical Mystery Tour' in and around West Malling.
