West Calder

West Calder is a village in the Scottish council area of West Lothian, neighbouring Livingston where visitors will find two large shopping centres. The village developed as a centre for the oil shale industry in the 19th century and still has its own railway station, which provides good transport links the the rest of Scotland. The village is characterised by a predominance of mid-20th century housing, and features a public library that was built in 1903 in the Art Nouveau style with an ornately decorative interior. West Calder also features a memorial in the village centre in remembrance of the fifteen men who were killed on the 10th January 1947 in an explosion at the local Burngrange oil shale mine.
