The district of Welling in the London Borough of Bexley is first recorded in 1362 using its old name of ‘Wellyngs’ that is thought to relate to the wells and springs in the area. In the Roman era, Welling was on the important road between London and Dover, Watling Street, and trade and development came here with the travellers, as coaching inns were built and the population increased. Much of the history of this area is tied up with the magnificent manor of Danson that was built in the late 18th century and survives today in the middle of Danson Park. The coming of the railways in the 19th century increased the prosperity of the town as the local economy was based on market gardening and the trains could get perishable produce to London markets more quickly.
Visitors to Welling will find a pleasant, residential suburb with historic houses, attractive architecture, lovely parks and open spaces as well as picturesque scenery in the surrounding areas. The town has good amenities, a range of shops, choice of eateries, traditional pubs and easy access to activities in and around the area.
