Wedmore

The village if Wedmore in Somerset is in a picturesque location, perched high on rocky ground, overlooking the Somerset Levels and surrounded by marshland. Wedmore is one of the largest villages in the county, with the Rivers Axe and Brue on either side and nearby, the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge. Iron Age remains attest to early settlement of the area that clearly prospered and continued to develop; a pot thought to date from the 11th century was excavated in the churchyard, containing over 200 silver coins from the reigns of Kings Ethelred, Canute and Harold I. The stone cottages of the village face outwards, with their backs to the green in a Saxon design that would have been built around a market square. Wedmore was an important market centre for the surrounding agricultural area and its market cross dates from the 14th century.

Wedmore offers some amenities, shops and pubs and is within easy reach of other settlements offering additional choices for dining, shopping and leisure. Wedmore attracts visitors who come to explore the history and enjoy the incredible location; there are several natures reserves in the area and bird-watchers enjoy the local peat moors that are a rich source of food for birds. Much of Wedmore’s architecture is Georgian and although St. Mary’s Church appears to have been built during the 15th century, it is thought to be older as there are traces of work from the early 13th and 14th centuries.
