The historic market town of Wareham in the beautiful county of Dorset lies between the Rivers Frome and Piddle and is built on an island between the marshy river plains. This location has been of strategic importance throughout its history, with the River Frome serving as a small harbour for the town when it was a port, before the river silted up. Wareham was subject to frequent attacks by the Vikings leading to the building of defensive walls around the town and although Wareham is no longer the port it once was, there are still pleasure craft along the River Frome. The Purbeck Information and Heritage Centre as well as the Wareham Town Museum, offer a fascinating insight into the history of Wareham the surrounding Purbeck countryside.
Wareham is amidst diverse, picturesque scenery and perfect for visitors looking to explore the habitats, flora, fauna and wildlife of the area and is particularly popular with bird watchers and walkers. There are ample amenities and a good choice of shops, galleries, pubs and eateries here as well as the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities and attractions nearby.
