The town of Ware in the county of Hertfordshire is one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Western Europe. Archaeologist Robert Kiln describes in his book, 'The Dawn of History in East Herts', how excavations near Ware Lock had revealed settlements going back to the Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age - some 5,000 - l0,000 years ago. Evidence of a sizable Roman settlement here has been found in the foundations of several buildings; including a temple and two cemeteries. The town is located on what was once the Roman road from London to Lincoln.
Visitors today will find much of historic worth here in Ware; with a 14th century priory, now the local council offices and just opposite, the imposing 14th century parish church of St. Mary and a walk along the riverside, will reveal 18th century riverside gazebos; many of which have been restored. Ware is set amidst some of the most beautiful countryside in the county and there are lovely walks along the River Lea and the New River, as well as the valleys of the rivers Ash and Rib. Nature Reserves on both sides of the town are particularly beloved of bird-watchers.
