Wantage is the birthplace of King Alfred the Great, the first unifying Anglo-Saxon king of early England; as well as his son, King Edward the Elder. Thomas Hardy based his fictional town of 'Alfredston' from his novel Jude the Obscure, on Wantage due to this fact. This is a market town in Oxfordshire's Vale of White Horse, neighbouring Abingdon, Didcot, and the county of Berkshire. The town is situated in the midst of some historical horse racing country, with a number of prime riding routes and gallops to be found in the area. Several waterways have their sources in these valleys including the Edgehill Springs, which rise by the town, and the Letcombe Brook which flows directly through, making the Wantage all the more pleasant for walks and cycling. This town's position at the foot of the Berkshire Downs escarpment, and in the centre of the valley and so is the main tourist location of the local region. It houses the Downland Museum and a large market square, which features the famous statue of King Alfred the Great.
