Walton-on-Thames is a town in Surrey in South-East of England, within the London Commuter Belt and on the banks of the River Thames between Sunbury Lock and Shepperton Lock. This section of the River Thames includes a loop around Desborough Island, which makes it a very popular place to visit by narrowboat.
The original village of Walton, just to the north of the current settlement is thought to have been founded by the Saxons or by the early Britons. The name is thought to derive from the Anglo-Saxon term for "farm of the Britons". A Celtic settlement pre-dated both the Saxons and the Britons, however, and this fascinating and complex history can be explored at the Elmbridge Museum.
The new town of Walton-on-Thames was redevelopment closer to the railway station, which allowed the town to grow rapidly as a commuter dormitory for the capital, which is only a 25 minute journey away. The addition of the newly developed shopping centre, plus the convenient transport links have made the town a very pleasant base from which tourists like to explore the sites and attractions of London, along with the English South-East as a whole.
