Waltham Cross is the most south-easterly town in Hertfordshire, within the Greater London commuter belt. It is named for the landmark cross in the town centre, which is one of the three remaining medieval Eleanor Crosses, that commemorates one of the over-night resting places of the deceased Queen Eleanor, wife of King Edward I, while on her processional route to Westminster Abbey in 1290.
