The town of Wallasey in Merseyside looks out across the mouth of the River Mersey and is actually made up of a number of smaller places including Egremont, Leasowe, Liscard, New Brighton, Poulton, Seacombe and Wallasey Village. These areas grew into each other following the opening in 1934 of the Queensway Tunnel linking Birkenhead and Liverpool. Wallasey is a tranquil place that was, in the 1960’s, a prestigious holiday resort. There are strong naval links too due to the proximity to the shipyards of Bootle and Birkenhead just up the coast. Wallasey was used as a tower of guard for shipping entering the Mersey estuary and it was in the 18th century that both Liscard and Perchrock forts were built, along with the New Brighton lighthouse. These structures were used right up until the 1950's by army and navy personnel.
In Wallasey, you will find the majority of the shops and amenities in the Liscard area whilst New Brighton at the far north-east of the Wirral Peninsular, is considered the resort area; and has been since the 20th century when it was the most popular holiday resort in the North West of England. New Brighton has miles of sandy beaches, entertainment, a fun fair and plenty for visitors to enjoy. Although tourism here is less important than it once was, the New Brighton area of Wallasey remains a lovely place to visit or live.
