Dubbed the "Merrie City" in the Middle Ages, the City of Wakefield is a metropolitan district of West Yorkshire, England. It is situated by the River Calder on the edge of the Pennines. Wakefield Cathedral has the tallest cathedral spire in Yorkshire, which is visible across the surrounding countryside and the Civic Quarter on Wood Street includes historical buildings such as the Neoclassical Wakefield Crown Court of 1810 and the Town Hall built in 1880.
There are several ancient monuments in the local area including the old Wakefield Bridge with its Chantry Chapel, and Sandal Castle, as well as Lawe Hill in Clarence Park. Another well known fixture of the land is structure is the 95 arch railway viaduct on the Doncaster to Leeds railway line. A battle of the Wars of the Roses was fought here, too, and Wakefield was also a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War. The town eventually become an rich market town, wool producer and coal mining community. The National Coal Mining Museum for England is located within the metropolis.
