Valley

The village of Valley in Anglesey, Wales lies on the west coast and in Welsh is known as either Y Dyffryn or Y Fali. The area surrounding the village is flat and does not actually have a natural valley; it is thought that the man-made dip in the land that was created when the railway and bridge to Holy Island were constructed may be the ‘valley’ that the name refers to. However, there are many other versions of how the name came to be. There used to be a workhouse here that was built about 1850 and only demolished in 1999. There was much poverty and illness in the past and parts of the workhouse became a hospital. The workhouse was designed by a Mr. Thomas of Meani Bridge and had separate rooms for men, women and vagrants, as well as a hospital room and a mortuary.

Valley prospered by its location as visitors travelling to the island of Holyhead would pass through the village as they still do today. There are some amenities and shops here and of course the large town of Holyhead is just a short distance when looking for more choice. Valley’s weekly livestock market is still a large and colourful event that brings commerce to the village. Valley railway station serves the village as well as the nearby RAF base.
