Uttoxeter

The historic market town of Uttoxeter in the county of Staffordshire was originally a settlement during Saxon times, around the 6th century. This was a turbulent and violent time in history that saw the Saxons drive out the Britons. Uttoxeter is set on high ground above the flood plain of the River Dove and it is thought that the site of the original settlement was near where the market place is today; due to its access to a natural water supply. The first record of Uttoxeter comes in 1086 when it was included in the Domesday Book.

Uttoxeter is a friendly, welcoming town that still holds its colourful market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Well known for its National Hunt Racecourse too, Uttoxeter is holds around 21 meetings every year, including the Midlands Grand National every spring. A great place to explore the origins and character of Uttoxeter is the Heritage Centre in Carter Street; this restored 17th century timber-framed building houses displays of local history.
