Usk

The small town of Usk in the historic county of Monmouthshire was founded about AD 55 as Roman legionary fortress of Burrium; the earliest legionary fortress in Wales. Usk is steeped in history and visitors will find many historic sites including the ruins of a Norman castle that came after the Roman fortress was abandoned. Usk Castle was built by the powerful de Clare family and is one of the few castles still privately owned and occupied.

The beautiful countryside that surrounds this picturesque town adds to the charm and appeal of Usk, with visitors coming throughout the year to explore the history and enjoy the scenery. Independent shops, a choice of pubs, bars, restaurants and eateries as well as good amenities and a wealth of historic sites and buildings, provide everything for the visitor. The area is popular for walking holidays, golf, bird watching and those who want to make the most of the outdoors.
