A suburban town, Upminster is in the county of Essex and home to the Grade II listed Upminster Windmill; one of the few remaining mills in the Greater London area. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Upminster as having a population of just 39. By around 1200 though, St. Laurence's Church was built and indicated an increase in both the prosperity and population of the town. William Derham was rector here from 1689 to 1735 and is well known because he treated his parishioners' ailments and kept detailed records of the geology and climactic conditions of the locality. He then used these notes to compare with other observers in different parts of the country. Further history and heritage can be found at the Tithe Barn Museum, containing artefacts from the area.
Upminster today offers plenty of shopping, good amenities and a choice of pubs, eateries and cultural activities. The area in and around Upminster includes Clock House Gardens, Upminster Park, the River Ingrebourne and other open spaces; providing lovely areas for walking and outdoor pursuits. Another of the reasons that Upminster is recognisable to many, is its associated with Ian Dury and his 1981 album ‘Lord Upminster’ that is named after the town.
