Ullapool

Ullapool is a small town of around 1,500 people, on Loch Broom, in the Scottish council area of Ross and Cromarty. Although it is rather small for a town, it is the largest settlement in the area, and a major tourist destination for the Scottish Higlands, where the North Atlantic Drift brings relatively mild temperatures, so that surprisingly exotic plants can be grown in the area.

The town is surrounded by rugged mountains, such as An Teallach, Beinn Dearg, Bheinn Ghobblach, and Ben Mhor Coigach, along with the magnificent Loch Broom. It was founded by the British Fisheries Society, in 1788, as a herring port, and was designed by Thomas Telford; and many important discoveries have been made in the area that contributed to the understanding of plate tectonics since then.
