Uckfield is an attractive market town in the county of East Sussex on the River Uck, one of the tributaries of the River Ouse. The town falls within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and with the Ashdown Forest nearby, offers picturesque scenery and is ideal for those looking for plenty of outdoor attractions. Uckfield retains some of its medieval past that centres on Holy Cross Church; a Roman Catholic Church dedicated to Our Lady Immaculate and St Philip Neri. Other churches and historic buildings abound, as does myth, mystery and legend. There are associations with the disappearance of Lord Lucan, the hoax of the Piltdown Man in nearby Piltdown and the tale of Nan Tuck's Ghost. According to legend, an old witch is said to have lived in a wood in nearby Buxted in an area where nothing now grows; the ghost is said to chase people who wander along Nan Tuck's Lane at night.
The town centre of Uckfield is a friendly, busy place with a good choice of shopping facilities including small specialist shops, antique shops, eateries and a leisure centre with swimming pool. Visitors can enjoy the lovely walks, flora, fauna and wildlife to be found towards the bottom of the town, on the banks of the River Uck where there is also a pedestrianised area called Bell Walk.
