Twickenham is a large suburb around 10 miles outside of central London. Excavations in this area have dated the settlement back to as far as the early Neolithic period, originally called Tuiccanham.
During Norman times, Twickenham was within the Manor of Isleworth and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Today, Twickenham is most commonly known as being the home of Rugby in England, boasting the largest rugby stadium in the country – able to seat a massive 82,000. The stadium recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first ever international at HQ, making it a real icon in rugby.
Interesting places to visit include Marble Hill House, which contains some very important early Georgian furniture and paintings, over an enormous 66 acres of parkland which borders the River Thames. The World Rugby Museum is also worth a visit – with some relics from the earliest days of the game on show.
