The town of Turriff in Aberdeenshire, Scotland is set high above sea level, offering stunning views out over this diverse region. The history of Turriff is rich and often bloody as the town is where the first engagements of the ‘Wars of the Three Kingdoms’ in the mid 17th century took place. It was in 1639 at Turriff that the Marquis of Huntly assembled his forces before proceeding to Kintore and eventually marching on Aberdeen. It is also noted that the Knights Templar appear to have been based here at some point as the nearby ‘Temple Brae’ suggests. The market cross that stands in the middle of Castle Street here dates back to the early 16th century, although the base was added later and dates from 1865; the castle from which ‘Castle Street’ took its name, no longer exists.
Turriff offers ample amenities and facilities as well as easy access to additional options in nearby towns and villages. From its wonderful location here at the heart of Aberdeenshire, Turriff is perfectly placed for those wishing to explore the castles, distilleries, museums and historic sites of the region. With excellent fishing, shooting, golf and other activities available locally along with walking routes and diverse flora, fauna and wildlife, there is plenty to see, do and enjoy. A great time to visit is during the annual two-day agricultural show in Turriff; the Turriff Show which is one of Scotland's largest agricultural shows.
