The town and port of Troon in Ayrshire, Scotland lies across the Firth of Clyde with views out to the Isle of Arran and is well known as the home of the famous Royal Troon Golf Course that hosts the Open Golf Championship every seven years. It was the Duke of Portland who took the existing natural harbour and began to develop it with the addition of docks. Growth at the harbour continued with more protection put in place with an artificial ballast bank that was created from the dumped ballast of incoming merchant ships. By the early 19th century, Troon had become the terminus of a horse-drawn railway that served to connect the Duke's coal mines around Kilmarnock. Troon Harbour went on to play an important part in the development of the town with the shipbuilding industry growing and a busy fishing fleet that moved here from Ayr. Today, Troon Harbour is still very much a fishing port as well as a yachting marina, seasonal passenger ferry port and terminal for timber and containers.
Troon is a beautifully located seaside town with soft, sandy beaches overlooking the Isle of Arran and offering a wonderful choice of eateries, shops and amenities as well as a host of attractions and activities that bring the visitors. Golfers in particular come to Troon as it is home to six quality golf courses including of course, the championship links course of Royal Troon. The marina area has been developed and Troon Yacht Haven is now one of the Clyde's leading sailing centres. Troon is rich with history too and within the area are historic sites and buildings to be explored along with picturesque gardens and open spaces.
