Trawsfynydd

The rural village of Trawsfynydd in Gwynedd, Wales has long been settled and archaeological finds attest to pre-historic settlements here. Nearby the village is Llyn Trawsfynydd, a large man-made reservoir completed in 1928 and designed to supply the water needed for the Maentwrog hydro-electric power station. At the time of its creation, the flooding for the lake eradicated around 25 properties but the prosperity and employment brought by the power station were considered worth the sacrifice.

Trawsfynydd offers ample amenities and shops, pubs and eateries as well as nearby historic sites of interest and visitor attractions. There is only one listed building in the village, St. Madryn’s Church that was tragically burned down in 1978 and re-opened in 1981. To get an idea of how life was lived through the ages here and in the area surrounding Trawsfynydd, the multimedia exhibition at Llys Ednowain has exhibits and displays relating to the Bronze and Iron ages as well as a replica of the Trawsfynydd Tankard.
