Towcester is the oldest town in the county of Northamptonshire and was known as Lactodorum in Roman times. During the Roman era it was a major staging post on the strategic road from London to Chester, Watling Street and a garrison town was established where Towcester is today. This small town recently revealed its ancient heritage with Iron Age finds that show Towcester to be one of the oldest, continuously inhabited settlements in the country. The first people are thought to have settled here in the middle Stone Age, Mesolithic era.
The lively Watling Street is still the centre of activity today in Towcester, with good shopping facilities and amenities. Many of the homes and businesses here are Grade II listed buildings and the whole central area of town is designated as a conservation area. Towcester gets a lot of visitors who are here for the Towcester Racecourse that hosts 19 National Hunt race meetings each year. Towcester is surrounded by picturesque Northamptonshire countryside that offers plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities as well as stunning scenery.
