The busy market town of Totnes in the attractive county of Devon lies on the River Dart in an area noted for its beautiful countryside. This ancient town is within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a true blend of past and present; the town still follows the plan of more than a thousand years ago. A castle was built here around 907, evidence that the settlement was prospering and gaining importance in the region. By the 12th century, Totnes was a thriving market town that continued to develop and has fine examples still of 16th and 17th century architecture in the former merchants' houses.
Totnes has everything a visitor could hope for, with ample amenities, plenty of shopping, a great choice of eateries, restaurants and pubs as well as an ever-growing cultural community. Music, art, theatre and natural health are well catered for with a ‘New Age’ community contributing to the bohemian atmosphere. The Leechwell is well worth taking time to discover; a set of three springs known in the past for their healing properties and still considered by many today to bring health and well-being.
