Torrington

The traditional market town of Great Torrington in the attractive county of Devon is high up above the River Torridge and offers spectacular views across the surrounding countryside. This is ‘Tarka Country’, the stunning landscape that was captured by Henry Williamson in his novel Tarka the Otter in 1927. The tranquillity depicted in the book still exists today although history tells other stories; it is here that the Battle of Great Torrington in 1646 marked the end of Royalist resistance in the West Country. The Torrington Town Trail known as the Civil War Trail, takes visitors back into the more violent past of Torrington and is a great way to discover the people and places that contributed to this town’s heritage.

Great Torrington has wonderful shops and amenities as well as the refurbished Victorian Pannier Market with its craft workshops selling fresh local produce, gifts and collectables. There are plenty of eateries, pubs and visitor, historic and cultural attractions to enjoy, including Torrington 1646; this popular tourist attraction takes visitors back to the 17th century with costumed characters, depictions of life in Torrington during the English Civil War and the intriguing secrets of the Physic Garden, the bum-roll, the rat-catcher and the worms in your teeth.
