Torpoint

The town of Torpoint in the county of Cornwall is on the Rame Peninsula, opposite the city of Plymouth. Three chain ferries take passengers and vehicles across the Hamoaze to Plymouth; taking just several minutes to make the crossing. The chain ferry dates back to 1831 and much of the history and heritage of Torpoint is linked to the sea. In the 18th century the area was a naval base and ferry point, only developing into a town by the early 19th century. There is no harbour here but the Old Ballast Pond erected around 1783 to shelter ballast barges within massive walls, serves well. The Royal Navy's main training facility, HMS Raleigh is here and to the north is the Yonderberry naval fuel depot with 28 tanks erected in 1920.

Torpoint is a wonderful place for visitors with excellent amenities and shops, a choice of pubs and eateries as well as cultural, historic and visitor attractions; including Mount Edgcumbe House which is considered one of the most beautiful historic sights in Cornwall and the Antony Woodland Garden with 100 acres of gardens and natural woodlands and birds.
