Tonbridge is a market town in the county of Kent, on the River Medway. It is located 30 miles south of London, by Tunbridge Wells. Tonbridge is situated on an area of higher land on the otherwise marshy River Medway, and on the Medway Navigational canal, which is a popular route for walkers and for visitors exploring the area by barge.
The first castle was built in the town in the 11th century by the cousin of William the Conqueror and changed hands many times before being acquired by Henry VIII when he executed the previous owner, the Duke of Buckingham for treason. The remains of the original motte-and-bailey castle can still be seen clearly in the town as well as the substantial castle gatehouse.
