Todmorden is a small rural market town in West Yorkshire, England and is part of the Upper Calder Valley. Todmorden town centre is situated on the confluence of three steep sided valleys of the Pennines, which dictated the shape in which the town had grown. Todmorden is surrounded by moorlands with occasional outcrops of gritstone sandblasted by winds, making this a very popular destination for walkers. The Domesday Book refers to a more dispersed settlement in the area, with most people living in scattered farms or in isolated hilltop settlements. Many of the original packhorse trails, which were marked by ancient stones, still survive. The town became relative prosperous in during the textile production heyday of the North of England, and some of the Yeomen clothiers had the means to build fine houses, of which some still exist today.
