Thornton Heath is a district of South London in the county of Surrey that experienced and amazing period of growth between 1861 and 1911. This once isolated rural outpost became a thriving, integrated metropolitan suburb. It was the arrival of the railways in 1862 that the new railway station Thornton Heath became the final piece in an urban chain linking the two major centres of London and Croydon. Thornton Heath lies just two miles north of Croydon and 7.5 miles south of the City of London. By 1911, Thornton Heath had three parades, an abundance of shops and the Electric Palace cinema that opened in the High Street in 1910.
Thornton Heath remains a busy place for the resident or visitor with plenty of shopping, dining, social and cultural activities on hand. The area is picturesque and there are lovely walks here, including the thirty-acre Grange Wood. Thornton Heath's historic Victorian baths were demolished in recent times to be replaced by a more modern sports and leisure centre in 2004.
