Thornhill is a town in the southern Scottish county of Dumfries and Galloway, neighbouring Sanquhar and Dumfries. It enjoys a pretty location in the Nith valley, close to several hill ranges, including the Carsphairn and Scaur range, and the Lowther hills, which are a popular draw for outdoor enthusiast, while the Nith and its tributaries are known for their excellent fishing. It it perhaps understandable, then, that the town centre features a monument to the explorer Joseph Thomson, the namesake of the Thomson's Gazelle, who was a local of the area and was undoubtedly inspired by the rugged and awe-inspiring landscape of southern Scotland. The town's high street is well stocked with a good range of shops, various leisure venues, and a choice of holiday accommodation, and although the town lacks a train link, it offers several good bus services, with routes from Dumfries to Ayr and Dumfries to Edinburgh.
