Thirsk is a small market town of 5,000 people in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England, adjoining Sowerby. Thirsk is a popular tourist destination due to the Thirsk Racecourse and the town's proximity to the North Yorkshire Moors, with ease of access to the major towns and city of York, Ripon and Northallerton. Thirsk grew around a large medieval market square, which still holds an open-air market every Saturday and Monday.
Veterinary surgeon and author James Herriot, lived here, and the veterinary practice on Kirkgate, at which he partnered now houses a museum dedicated to his life and accomplishments in his field. Another particularly well known local attraction is the Kilburn White Horse: a chalk horse which was carved into the hillside four miles east of the town in 1857.
